Guildford to Godalming Greenway proposals

Please read the information below which provides the main details of our proposals. Click on the Plans under "Additional materials" to view these proposals on a map. You can have your say using the survey at the bottom of the page. Consultation period closes 21 November 2021.

Guildford Town Centre to Broadford Rd

High Street to Guildford Rowing Club

Where the A281 meets the High Street, a two-way segregated cycle track is proposed on the western side of the A281 as far south as Millbrook car park, enabling cyclists to be segregated from motor traffic and pedestrians. An indicative layout is given by the diagram below. This proposal will require reallocation of the second northbound carriageway lane into the traffic lights (modelled to have a negligible impact on traffic flows within the bounds of daily variation). The signalised crossing across the A281 which joins the High Street would also be converted to a toucan crossing so that it is accessible to cyclists as well as pedestrians.

South of Milbrook car park, where there is insufficient space to provide a continuous fully segregated cycle track, the footway would be shared use for pedestrians and cyclists, as it currently is.

Dagley Lane

At Guildford Rowing Club, the scheme moves off-road along Dagley Lane, through to Broadford Rd (A248). Improvements are proposed to provide a continuous and bound shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists of approximately 3 metres wide. Improved lighting will be considered along some sections (not all). Dagley Lane runs parallel to the A281; the A281 is not considered a suitable option for a cycle route due to high traffic volumes and speeds, and because there is insufficient space to provide the continuous segregated cycle infrastructure that would be required to make this a safer, more attractive route.

A section of this proposal along Dagley Lane, between Shalford Thames Water and the bridge over the railway, is currently being considered for construction utilising Government Active Travel Funding awarded to Surrey County Council. This would cover the location shown in the image below. This has recently been consulted on separately for potential construction. This section will not be lit and a bound surface of generally between 2 - 3 metres wide is proposed.

Broadford Rd to King's Rd

Broadford Rd

Broadford Rd (A248) between Dagley Lane and Broadford Bridge is particularly constrained by narrow highway width (location shown in image below). Our proposal is to reallocate the south-eastern footway to widen the north-western footway to approximately 2.5 - 3.0 metres, with a pinch point of 2.1 metres in one location. South-west of Broadford Bridge, the existing off-road shared footway/cycleway would be widened to a width of approximately 3 metres, with improved lighting.

Oakdene Rd to New Pond Rd

On-road cycling is proposed along Oakdene Rd and Mill Lane. These are quiet residential roads closed to through traffic and therefore offer a good facility for cycling on-road. At the southern end of Oakdene Rd/Mill Lane, a new toucan crossing is proposed to join the existing shared use footway/cycleway on the western side of the A3100 which leads to New Pond Rd. This existing footway/cycleway would be widened.

A3100 from New Pond Rd to King's Rd

A new toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists is proposed across New Pond Rd. Additionally, the existing shared footway/cycleway along the south side of New Pond Rd joining Summers Road would also be improved.

South of New Pond Rd, the existing shared footway/cycleway along the A3100 would be widened, and a secondary parallel facility for non-motorised users along the existing service track would be enabled. It is proposed that the shared footway/cycleway would run as far south-west as King's Road. A new bound path for pedestrians and cyclists is also proposed on Waverley Borough owned land adjacent to Godalming Town Football Club, joining the A3100 with Broadwater Park West car park. Image below: a section of the existing shared footway/cycleway along the A3100 that would be widened.

Toucan crossings are also proposed to connect the A3100 facility with Catteshall Rd.

King's Rd to Godalming town centre

Along the A3100, south-west of King's Rd/Catteshall Rd, there is insufficient space to provide a continuous off-road cycle facility. Different options are being considered instead to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists entering Godalming:

Lammas Lands west of Bridge Rd:

A board walk of approximately 3 - 4 metres in width is proposed as an option across the Lammas Lands to the west of Bridge Rd. The boardwalk would run south-west from A3100 / Bridge Rd roundabout, across the Lammas Lands, crossing the River Wey to the rear of Godalming Library (see plans attached below). This would provide a more attractive and scenic facility for pedestrians and cyclists away from Bridge Rd, which is space constrained and experiences high volumes of motor traffic.

Lammas Lands parallel to Hell Ditch:

Another option is to provide a bound 3 metres wide path (buff coloured surface) across the Lammas Lands between Catteshall Rd and Bridge Rd, just south of Godalming United Church. Potentially, if agreed in the future with landowners, a new pedestrian/cyclist bridge could be provided over the River Wey to connect this proposed path with the service road adjoining Flambard Way. This would provide a direct continuation from the facility along the A3100, however, it would need to be demonstrated that constructing a path is feasible from a flood risk management perspective. There is uncertainty that it will be, and consequently we wanted to understand whether there is public support to merit continuing to develop this option.

Signed cycle links:

Signed on-road cycle links are also proposed into and through south Farncombe and Catteshall (see plans attached below).

Godalming 'Greenway Gateway' project

We are also working with Waverley Borough Council on the Godalming 'Greenway Gateway' project they are leading. This plans to provide a cycle link along The Burys and through the Phillips Memorial Park, between the Bridge Rd/Flambard Way and Bridge Street roundabout and Borough Rd.

The Burys

Along The Burys two options are being considered:

1) Relatively low existing traffic volumes and speeds along The Burys means it could potentially be converted to a ‘cycle street'. This would see the speed limit reduced from 30 to 20 mph, the road centre line being removed and advisory cycle lanes provided on each side (see example below). Motor vehicles would be required to travel down the middle of the street unless meeting an oncoming vehicle. Current average speeds measured indicate that 2 or 3 road tables should be sufficient to support the 20mph speed limit and these would also provide informal crossing opportunities for pedestrians. These measures would reduce motor vehicle speeds and give cyclists greater visibility and priority.

2) The alternative would be to retain The Burys as a 30mph street and create a new 3m wide segregated cycle path, extending the existing pavement into the Phillips Memorial park. However, this would include significant surfacing over greenspace and could impact trees along the southern edge of the park.

Phillips Memorial Park

West of the entrance to the Crown Court car park, it is proposed that the cycle link would leave The Burys, taking a route through the Phillips Memorial Park. This would be facilitated either through provision of a new cycle track of approximately 3 metres width, separated from existing footpaths, or widening of some of the existing paths to approximately 4 metres in width, accommodating shared use by pedestrians and cyclists. At the entrance from Borough Rd, the path would need to be shared use to retain the old wall around the pound. The segregated option would separate pedestrians and cyclists but would result in greater surfacing of greenspace.
